Robert Cox

Board Member

Robert Cox is former President of the Sierra Club, author, and Professor Emeritus of Communication Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As President of the 1.2 million members and supporters of the Sierra Club, Dr. Cox has advised and/or led successful campaigns for wilderness and public lands protection, energy policy, and other environmental issues in the U.S. Congress and in the for-profit sector. Over his 30 years in the Sierra Club, he has initiated programs in strategic assessment, campaign design, non-profit governance reform, and environmental justice. Dr. Cox currently serves as adviser for the Sierra Club’s communication and digital strategies operations. He served on the Club’s board of directors from 1993-2013.

Dr. Cox is a prolific author and lecturer on environmental, climate, and social movement communications. He is the author of Environmental Communication and the Public Sphere (2013), the Routledge international reference volume Environment and Communication (forthcoming), and numerous articles on environmental and climate change communication, and strategic campaigns. Dr. Cox serves on the advisory board for the Graduate Program in Environmental Humanities at the University of Utah, and the editorial board for Environmental Communication: A Journal of Nature and the Environment.

Dr. Cox is a longtime trekker in Asia, Africa, and the U.S. He is the co-founder of More Than Mountains, Inc., a non-profit trekking company in Nepal that aids educational and environmentally sustainability projects in Tamang villages in rural districts of that country.
